The First Heisman Watch Update and Other Sport Ponderings

Before I get to telling you how nobody wants to win the Heisman, it's time to catch up on some other sports topics.

- If you or someone you love still thinks that the NFL is putting the best sports product on national television, they are very wrong. The NFL's referees have thrown two more flags per game than last season which, might not sound too bad but, there have already been more illegal contact calls than ALL of 2013. Watching the NFL has felt like a chore more than any season previous (but let's be honest here, it's not a chore). The product on the field is bad and the product off the field has been greatly diminished by Roger Goodell and the scandalous headlines of player arrests. College Football is piece-by-piece starting to admit that the NCAA and all of their outdated standards are ridiculous, rising fan interest and approval. For what it's worth, until 2013 I never would have skipped a Sunday for anything of minor importance and Saturday was the day of the weekend when I got things done. Now? the roles are reversed and fantasy football is the one thing (not named Russell Wilson) keeping me involved as a fan of professional football.

- Lebron beat the Cavs or Heat or whoever it is that he plays for now (he can't even remember) 122-119 in overtime. The real star of the show was Miami's rookie Point Guard Shabazz Napier, who scored all 16 of his points in the 4th quarter or overtime and missed two game-winning 3-point attempts in OT as he played like he wanted Jason Terry's spot on the NBA's all-overconfidence team.

Shabazz's inner monologue - "How can I get this ball and shoot it?"

- Hockey has started. I don't cover hockey but I do have a fantasy hockey team so, we'll see how long I keep up with that....

My Fantasy Hockey Roster (if anyone is interested)
Claude Giroux, Joe Pavelski, Shea Weber, Semyon Varlamov, Sergei BOBROVSKY!, Jarome Iginla, Dustin Byfuglien, Eric Staal, Roberto Luongo, Alexander Semin, Wayne Simmonds, Tyson Barrie, Brad Richards, Justin Williams, Erik Johnson, Jason Garrison, Tyler Johnson, Vladimir Tarasenko, Jonas Hiller, Kevin Bieksa, Tyler Toffoli, David Desharnais.

Welcome back to the squad, Bobrovsky!

- Let's stop predicting the MLB playoffs because... OH MY LANTA, everyone was wrong about everything. Royals swept the Angels (What? How could the based Trout disappoint baseball like this?!) and the Orioles swept the Tigers in the AL (There goes my World Series pick). In the NL, the Giants beat the Washington Nationals in a series that also had an 18-inning game to coincide the greatest Saturday in college football history as the Cardinals upset the Dodgers and became one of the least-deserving NLCS teams ever.

- I said Orioles in 5 and Giants in 6. Welp... the Royals lead 2-0. I was wrong. Again. I should just shut up and enjoy watching the great games. (PS: Giants over Orioles in 5)

On to the Heisman Race!

Your Present Top 5 Heisman Favorites (as of 10/12/14)
(Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)
THE Heisman favorite: Dak Prescott
1. Mississippi State Quarterback Dak Prescott
He isn't the world's prettiest passer but Dak Prescott has the rushing ability of a Cam Newton and has led the surprise undefeated team of the 2014 season over Texas A&M and Auburn. He might not even be one of the top five players in college right now but, as long as he's winning, Prescott is America's Heisman favorite.
2. Oregon Quarterback Marcus Mariota
With losses for three top ten teams (TCU, Auburn and Arizona), don't be utterly shocked when the one-loss Ducks, who just dominated preseason-favorites #18 UCLA, return to the top ten after a one-week absence. Mariota has been nearly flawless, only turning the ball over once this season in the most crucial moment of their one loss (to Arizona).
3. Wisconsin Running Back Melvin Gordon III
Wisconsin might be the most one-dimensional team outside of Army and Navy as Gordon is the only FBS player over 1,000 yards after six games. SIX GAMES. His draft stock is rising as Wisconsin's QB stock lowers. This team would have a losing record without him.
4. Baylor Quarterback Bryce Petty
You know how you get people to forget you missed a game earlier in the season? Throw for 500+ yards and 6 touchdowns in a 61-58 win over #9 TCU.
5. Notre Dame Quarterback Everett Golson
The year off for Golson did wonders for his game apparently. Golson has restored Notre Dame as a top-five dominant powerhouse. He has thrown 16 TD's and 4 INT's and become one of the most entertaining players in the post-Manziel world of college football.
Honorable Mentions: Marshall QB Rakeem Cato (When will Marshall get the respect it deserves!?), Nebraska RB Ameer Abdullah, Marshall QB Rakeem Cato, Florida State QB Jameis Winston although, I'm not too sure there's much honorable going on behind-the-scenes.
