Week 6 Results
#1 Florida State defeated Wake Forest 43-3 after sleepwalking through another first half.
Arizona upset #2 Oregon 31-24 amidst questionable Pac-12 refereeing on Thursday night.
#11 Ole Miss upset #3 Alabama 23-17 in a game where Nick Saban wished he had A.J. McCarron.
#25 TCU upset #4 Oklahoma 37-33 in an upset I called on Twitter.
#5 Auburn destroyed #15 LSU 41-7 in statement game that makes one ponder Les Miles' future.
#12 Mississippi State upset #6 Texas A&M 48-31 while the game was a bigger blowout than the score indicates.
#7 Baylor handed Texas a 28-7 loss in a near shutout for Art Briles' underrated defense.
Utah upset #8 UCLA 30-28 despite the Pac-12 refs' greatest efforts with a flopping kicker.
#9 Notre Dame beat #14 Stanford 17-14 with some last-minute action.
#10 Michigan State beat #19 Nebraska 28-22 thanks to an interception in the last forty seconds.
#13 Georgia won 44-17 over Vanderbilt... Nobody remembers this game.
Arizona State upset #16 USC on a hail mary in an incredible 38-34 comeback win.
Northwestern upset #17 Wisconsin despite 259 rushing yards from Melvin Gordon.
Utah State upset #18 Brigham Young 35-20 in a sad game where BYU QB Taysom Hill's season ended.
#20 Ohio State looked much better with a 52-24 win over a solid yet undeveloped Maryland team.
#21 Oklahoma State beat Iowa State 37-20 in a game with... weird time management.
#22 East Carolina won 45-24 over Southern Methodist despite SMU's best game yet.
#23 Kansas State crushed Kliff Kingsbury's Texas Tech 45-14 and will leap up the ranks next week.
Speaking of the ranks next week, I tried to figure out how the top 25 might look next week and... it's certainly different. Take a look...
Andy's Top 25 in College Football(as of 10-5-2014)
#1. Florida State - They have the longest current winning streak in college football and are still defending champions. It would take a couple of miracles to knock them out of the playoffs (AKA: Top 4) right now.
#2. Auburn - Gus Malzahn and Nick Marshall were in the championship game last year and have proven why the preseason ranks are pointless as they were ranked #5 at the beginning of the year DESPITE their 2013 success, no matter how lucky it was.
#3. Notre Dame - I'm sorry, Notre Dame haters. This team is hitting on all cylinders right now and Everett Golson is playing near-flawless football. They just beat a tough foe in #14 Stanford and that will earn more respect from the rankers.
#4. Baylor - Stanford > Texas. That is the only reason Baylor is not in the top 3... yet. Art Briles gets a ton of credit, rightfully so, for his offensive coaching but Baylor's defense has been better than expected proving this team is more of a real threat than Oregon's Ducks.
#5. Mississippi State - Texas A&M upset? Check. Undefeated? Check. Unbelievable Quarterback? Check. Dak Prescott & co. are taking the 2014 college football season by storm.
#6. Ole Miss - After an eventful morning on the College Gameday set (featuring Katy Perry and corn dogs), The Rebels took down Nick Saban despite last minute efforts and now head to Aggie-land as they will face Texas A&M on the road. If Ole Miss doesn't get #6 this week, look for them to earn an even higher rank next weekend.
#7. Michigan State - I don't like Michigan State's offense as much as other people as they keep too many tougher opponents hanging around with low-scoring battles. The defense is still top 5 in the FBS.
#8. Alabama - They were close to beating Ole Miss but 17 points? Not even game-manager A.J. McCarron had an offense that dead. RB Kenyan Drake is done for the year and the team might just start tanking as they appeared to be doing near the end of 2013.
#9. Oregon - The referees gave terrible calls on both sides of the Arizona upset but Oregon's offensive line and defense collectively cost Marcus Mariota his final championship run most likely.
#10. Oklahoma - What happened to the Samaje Perine Heisman hype? Oh wait, it was literally week 3 when people wanted to put them in their Heisman race. Just another example of why everyone needs to relax until week six-ish before looking at the ranks and races.
#11. Texas A&M - In a toss-up between the Aggies and Bulldogs, Kevin Sumlin's team will have to earn their way back up against Ole Miss. Kenny Hill's Heisman campaign and the season depend on it.
#12. Georgia - QB Hutson Mason isn't Aaron Murray but RB Todd Gurley might be the best Running Back in college presently. The Bulldogs travel to Missouri in another overhyped SEC battle that will either end in shock or boredom.
#13. UCLA - They were behind for a majority of Saturday's loss to Utah but, they managed to make a comeback and Brett Hundley is still great. They will be facing Oregon at home this weekend.
#14. Arizona - Half the nation didn't know Rich Rodriguez still coached and Arizona was undefeated until they saw them steal a game from #2 Oregon. Now, the bandwagon will be full by the end of next weekend.
#15. Ohio State - They've been inconsistent with games where they clearly miss Braxton Miller and games where they still have one of the best offensive lines. The Buckeyes are a strange team that I have no feel for whatsoever and will probably lose once or twice more before the season is over.
#16. Oklahoma State - Commanding wins in a week where everyone in front of the Cowboys falls can only mean good things for Oklahoma State's ranking.
#17. Stanford - A great defense and solid offense are still wearing cardinal red and they will only suffer a three spot fall after a tough game versus Notre Dame.
#18. East Carolina - QB Shane Carden is the Heisman Candidate nobody wants to talk about... yet.
#19. Kansas State - Jake Waters, Tyler Lockett, Bill Snyder, etc. This is a fun team filled with important names that has improved drastically over last season. They may get inside the top ten by November.
#20. TCU - After upsetting #4 Oklahoma, they might deserve a higher ranking than I gave them but either way, TCU has had an impressive start to their season.
#21. LSU - They're still LSU and will get ranked until more deserving teams emerge.
#22. Missouri - Congratulations on having the week off, Missouri. Enjoy your two-spot leap!
#23. Arizona State - There's no real reason they should have won over USC in that game other than the fact that USC's coaches had a miscommunication with the defensive backs on an obvious hail mary.
#24. Nebraska - Resilient teams will always get respect despite three terrible quarters against Michigan State.
#25. Marshall - It's about time we gave some respect to Rakeem Cato and the Marshall Thundering Herd that is destroying every team in their path.
Jim Lytle/Associated Press Dak Prescott is now a Heisman favorite but, there's a lot of football left to be played. |
Did I miss anyone? If so, leave a comment and speak freely because this is America.
No Longer Ranked: USC, Wisconsin, and BYU
New Ranked Teams: #14 Arizona, #23 Arizona State, and #25 Marshall
I love when super-hyped weekends like this one work out in the best possible ways. There were SIX match-ups between ranked teams and ELEVEN ranked teams fell. Just think about this for a moment... Oregon, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, UCLA, Stanford, Nebraska, LSU, USC, Wisconsin, Miami, Michigan, and Texas ALL LOST. There's no way any random grouping of five of those teams have ever lost in the same week ever. We just witnessed history. It was like watching twenty-seven gas stations blow up in a row (credit to Ryan Nanni for that wonderful comparison).
Next week is great as well with the following key match-ups...
Alabama @ Arkansas
Auburn @ Mississippi State
Ole Miss @ Texas A&M
Georgia @ Missouri
Oregon @ UCLA
TCU @ Baylor
All of the power schools are cancelling each other out and it is gloriously chaotic. Try topping that, Goodell.
Best of luck to all of your alma maters or whatever teams you don't dislike and may the upsets continue to be plentiful.
