Bro...
All that needs to be stated about this week's football results are that Carson Wentz tore his ACL and that is awful news for the Philadelphia Eagles (though they still have Nick Foles), Ryan's Team Easy Breesy (though he still has Drew Brees) and the NFC playoff picture (but hey, Aaron Rodgers has been medically cleared to play). Nothing else that happened affected our league in any dramatic manner outside of seeding differences. Spoiler alert about the upcoming playoffs: None of the four remaining teams' previous performances mean a thing. Ryan led the league in scoring? Big Whoop. Andy is the #1 seed as the only 10-4 team? Sorry, that doesn't count anymore. Nick and Scott on dramatically different trajectories with won-loss streaks that might indicate how prepared they are for this week? All it takes is one weird week for predictions to be thrown out the window. The same sentiments apply for Darrin, Alec, Tyler and Cole in the consolation bracket. All that matters is the future. Unfortunately, that is also the case for the Philadelphia Eagles these next two months.
Brett Davis - USA TODAY Sports For the second year in a row, Drew Brees was used mostly as a Bro League benchwarmer. "No longer!" screamed Carson Wentz's knee ligaments. |
Glancing at the previews for our upcoming playoff matchups, here are the results of everybody's head-to-head matches so far this season and why things will be different (one way or another) this time around...
- #4 Scott Bless Scott Damn v. #1 The Engine That Could. Series tied 1-1. Scott is 1-4 without suspended RB Ezekiel Elliott and we have yet to face without him active. This may have negative implications on both sides however, as I will (as of Wednesday evening) still be starting Elliott's reality teammate QB Dak Prescott over Aaron Rodgers. Both Joe Mixon and Chris Hogan are coming off of injuries that cost them games as well but, neither were injured at all in our last meeting. Not that Scott will use him but, Kelvin Benjamin was started in his week 8 victory over me and now Benjamin plays in Buffalo with Joe Webb or Nathan Peterman or Tyrod Taylor throwing him the ball.
- #3 Team Easy Breesy v. #2 Tremendous Big League. Series tied 1-1. It is unlikely that Nick will start Adrian Peterson and Bilal Powell for a combined 3 points again. Even with that major weakness in week 10, Nick still pulled off a 109-108 victory. Now, Nick has Marshawn Lynch (was on bye in week 10) and probably either Dion Lewis or Michael Crabtree in the FLEX slot instead. Also, Nick owns the #1 defense in the league with the red-hot Jaguars playing T.J. Yates (or Tom Savage) this week. Ryan has not had to change his powerful team very much, except for that one game Mike Evans was suspended for during these two's second match. Evans may be a sizable disappointment this season but, he's still an immense talent that should be an every-week starter.
- #8 Team ChowHounds v. #5 Launders Money With The WRPD. Alec has prevailed in both previous meetings. Darrin's team has been full of surprises all season between injuries (Rodgers, David Johnson, Greg Olsen & Julian Edelman), an 0-9 record, a sudden 3-game winning streak and the rise of sudden superstars Alvin Kamara and Adam Thielen. Kamara is coming off a concussion and Alfred Morris could look to make a big impression in what will likely be his final start of the 2017 season. On the other end of this duel, Alec is hoarding running backs (as someone who's high in the waiver order can do) with Alex Collins and Kenyan Drake both clearly starting in the NFL yet, still sitting on Alec's bench.
- #7 Colieveland 96ers v. #6 SNEEN MACHINE. Series tied 1-1. Cole stopped trusting his own version of the process once DeShaun Watson tore his ACL. Tom Brady has 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions since a supposedly minor ankle injury, thus killing any chance Sneen had at the winner's bracket. While Tyler will most likely stick with the GOAT, Cole has gone through a quarterback carousel in this post-Watson timeline that somehow included Brett Hundley and Walters is leaning with Matt Stafford for the first time versus Sneen. After many disappointing performances and injuries, it is also unlikely that we see Cole ever trust Amari Cooper again as he did in the past. Also, Jamaal Williams is apparently now a thing and Cole is hopping on his bandwagon.
No matter the results of who makes or misses the Shelby Bowl, I think we can all agree on one thing... A Cole/Darrin rematch for the MoonBak is the content we desire. I just hope the internet is still around for us to experience that and a lifetime of WRBL back-and-forths.
REMINDER: Annual WRBL Championship meeting is scheduled for Saturday, December 23rd at a TBD location.
