WRBL Week 9, 2024

  Wisconsin Rapids Bro League

Our tenth official season of blaming Cole Walters for throwing Saints receivers hospital balls.

Bro...

In what was a sloppy weekend of wet and wild football, many midwesterner's fears were concerned that the ankle-biting Detroit Lions are an absolute unit and unstoppable force at the moment. Even though there weren't "ideal" conditions for any type of event to take place at Lambeau Field on Sunday, it was still Jared Goff slinging the football more accurately than any quarterback ever over a six-week stretch and no, the Packers on the field were not at full strength and probably could have benefit from more ground-and-pound-and-slip-and-slide from Josh Jacobs, the best running back they've had since Ahman Green. Not to be outdone in efficiency, the NFL's other stalwart team took a muddy victory lap on Monday night in overtime to stay undefeated. The Chiefs showed minor glimpses of their late-2010s explosiveness on offense thanks to the addition of WR DeAndre Hopkins, which opened up T-o-d-d Todd To Go TE Travis Kelce to a 22-point night and Kansas City waltzed into 8-0. The Buccaneers sure do resemble a playoff team despite all the personnel they've lost and hats off to Baker Mayfield on making an excellent MVP audition tape this first half of the 2024 season. Something tells me NFL award voters will still prefer the league's highest scoring QBs, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson but Baker has been a weekly waiver wonder candidate that has yet to accumulate a single start in the Bro League. Bro... what's wrong with us?

@BussinTWB
These dudes all walked so that MVP Baker Mayfield could run.

Tampa Bay's overtime loss to the Chiefs has the Bucs two games back in a race for the NFC's third wildcard spot, presently occupied by the aforementioned Green Bay Packers. The Eagles and Vikings seem primed for second half drop-offs so I'm positive a spot will open up but considering how unpredictable the NFC West has been so far, it wouldn't surprise anyone to see any one of those four teams win the division and perhaps sneak another into the playoffs. This week, RB Christian McCaffrey is returning from Injured Reserve for his first action all season and that could easily turn a 4-4 49ers team into a 13-4 49ers team if things break correctly for Kyle Shanahan's squad. The third pick in this season's WRBL draft is bound to be the lead story coming out of the weekend, breakthrough performance or not and all eyes should be on Tua Lipa vs. Tax Paying Homeowner now that Nick and Alec are headed on divergent paths with Z losing b2b as Swanson hits rewind to the preseason, a total 360 to when he still had hope. One of these two will be in second place in the Shitter... I mean Shooter McGavin Division if I lose to Sparky, now that he's re-discovered his winning ways again.

In the Steven Nett Division, everyone's a winner but Gabe. I guess the Milwaukee Bucks "winning ways" must be contagious. Quick Gabe! Get out of that locker room before Doc tells you to sit your starters for the playoffs! Stoltz is our only real hope at gaining any ground in the Shooter division this week as he could knock Brett back a step instead of letting him casually stroll into the playoffs way ahead of everyone else. This season has been unlike any other in just how tight the standings are now but, Brett has separated himself in the easier of the two division races. Cole remains a game up on Hoefs and those two face each other this week with the likes of QB Jordan Love, RB Kenneth Walker and breakout TE Brock Bowers on bye so all guesses are as good as mine as to how that will finish. The Van Buren Boys have found a trustworthy twelve-point play of QB Joe Burrow and WR Ja'Marr Chase that will need to have a big Thursday night in Baltimore if the Bro League's highest scoring team wants to finally get a hold of top positioning in his division. Other highlighted games this weekend include the Steelers at Washington where the league's hottest young offense faces the league's best defense minus RB Brian Robinson Jr. (certainly leans in Pittsburgh's favor since I don't think I've ever seen Washington have a home-field advantage in my lifetime), the Cowboys bring back Cooper Rush (WHY TRADE A FOURTH ROUNDER FOR TREY LANCE, JERRY!!??) with Dak's hamstring torn (another QB not used this season in WRBL) to face the division-rival Eagles (Jalen Hurts... questionable?) and a matchup between social media's favorite team of the 2024 offseason (Houston) host social media's favorite team of the 2024 actual season (Detroit). Speaking of social media, I am now on Bluesky. I don't know what that means yet but it's provocative and it gets the people going, so I'm all in. Much like known Miami Dolphins fan Nick Zurawski, I'm also all in on Monday night's Miami game versus the LA Rams. I have a bold prediction that it's going to be a similar game to that of the 2018 Chiefs-Rams primetime game that had a 54-51 final. Nobody sees it coming because both teams have struggled to combine for a 6-10 record so far but I also don't think either team has been nearly as healthy as they are in this moment. Puka Nacua did just get a full half of rest this past weekend after his "punch" led to his ejection and I'm sure he's got way more pent up energy where that came from.

After somehow logging -4 receiving yards on two receptions with a TD this past week, I expect WR Jaylen Waddle to have a massive bounceback against a Rams secondary that just traded CB Tre'Davious White.

WRBL Week 8, 2024

  Wisconsin Rapids Bro League

Our tenth official season of blaming Cole Walters for sneaking drugs into kid's candy bars on Halloween.

Bro...

Happy Standings Tightening Week! (Which coincided with National Tight Ends Day). Much like in my TD-only league, the Bro League's supposed four favorites based on record lost this week to the four underdogs, bringing new life to Stoltzya's Electric Orcas, T-o-d-d Todd To Go and placing Brett alone at the top at 6-2. I don't think it was simply a coincidence that the week most Tight Ends decided to have their best games of the season, that underperforming teams came out on top in fantasy. It was certainly a close call though as I never remember that the final Sunday of October is apparently now always "National Tight Ends Day". That nugget of information could have come in handy when I benched TE Travis Kelce for the combination of WR Christian Watson and flexed WR Deebo Samuel. That duo combined for a totally fine but unremarkable 20.5 points while future HOFer Kelce dropped a season-high 25 on my bench. Somehow I still won thanks to RB Jordan Mason injuring his shoulder on Sunday night but, I still feel bad that I might have cost a weekly lineup lock his spot on the WRBL All-Bro 2nd Team at the end of the season. It doesn't seem possible for anyone to catch George Kittle for first in scoring at the position and now he's been passed by the likes of Kyle Pitts (he's finally arrived, free from Arthur Smith & Desmond Ridder's shackles!), Brock Bowers (Rookie of the Year?) and Dalton Kincaid (QB2 Josh Allen's one consistent target). So much for the teams we drafted showing up to play because Nick and I are running the walking wounded squads of 2024.

At work, there is constantly an overhead radio playing that I can occasionally make out what's being played through whatever I have going on in my earbuds. Recently I heard a sped up, TikTok-ified version of The Script's late-2000's hit song "Breakeven" and it put me firmly in "Old Man Yells At Cloud" mode. Between this and AI, we did not need this much innovation and neither did Russell Wilson. Former Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett is still one of the worst hires in the history of football and "let Russ cook" the same way he let megamind Aaron Rodgers do in Green Bay and the results were atrocious. Once it was Sean Payton and Joe Lombardi making the calls last year, Russell played like Kurt Warner early in his Cardinals tenure mixed with glimpses of the Russ that once was. It wasn't pretty but, it was a hell of a lot more effective and led to him getting another shot with Pittsburgh this year. After a nice 4-2 start led by QB Justin Fields and a fantastic defense, coach Mike Tomlin made the switch to a now fully healthy Russell Wilson and while the mobility from his 2010s Seattle run is never coming back, that man is still one of the better quarterbacks in the league when things are functional around him (play-calling, o-line play and running game). The Steelers are 2-0 with Wilson under center and George Pickens has never looked better, kind of like Courtland Sutton last season. Now, the Steel Curtain is headed into the bye week along with only the Dallas Cowboys. The two most over-showcased football teams in America on complete opposite paths from where most thought they'd be at this point. Dallas and San Francisco played on Sunday Night Football, I watched the recording at 5 AM Monday and I have to say... they both suck. I won't be commenting on why they suck, I just feel that it's an important time to address this and then hide my true beliefs.

Kelley L Cox-Imagn Images
Former Louisville and Wisconsin rookie RB Isaac Guerendo was tasked with a bulkier workload once Jordan Mason (of Tua Lipa) suffered a first quarter injury.

Reaching the halfway point of the NFL season means a couple of things. First of all, my TD-only league's midseason meeting will be taking place this Sunday and I won't really be watching much football outside of Lions-Packers and possibly the Cowboys game but I listed a quadfecta of QUADBOX options down below out of habit. Secondly, it's trrrrrrrrrade season baby! It was really nice of the Chiefs (WR DeAndre Hopkins and LB Josh Uche), Ravens (WR Diontae Johnson) and Vikings (OT Cam Robinson) to get the hype building up to this upcoming week's trade deadline and now I expect more. How do the Lions plan to replace DE Aidan Hutchinson the rest of the season? Is Za'Darius Smith in their field of view? Does EDGE Jadeveon Clowney get dealt by the firesale Panthers? Is Arizona interested? and what's Philly's big buy-now move? Do they want another receiver in case of an emergency like last season's Julio Jones rental? I know rookie Johnny Wilson hasn't lit the field ablaze by any means so, maybe that's the missing piece for a sleepier Eagles squad than in recent history.

No matter how the NFL decides to do their deadline, word around town is that the Bro League might embrace more trade activity this season than any season this decade so far. I need a receiver for one week before I get Nico Collins back so that I can just get by over Alec, who needs a helping hand or two to save him on Brock Purdy's bye. Nick probably wants a running back for a week without both Christian McCaffrey and his handcuff Jordan Mason, so that his .500 team can send fellow .500er Jaime Sparkes to a fifth consecutive loss. What has happened to Sparky's Dad Weights and Protein Shakes needs to be studied by the highest of academia, as Jayden Daniels remains the talk of the town after the most "lol Bears" Hail Mary victory saved his Commanders and his fantasy output. Not only is Daniels pushing forward but Alvin Kamara remains the PPR-dumpoff king of the Saints backfield with no other receiving options stepping forth without Rashid Shaheed. Sparky might just be willing to trade everyone not named Justin Jefferson and I'd understand it (though I definitely threw a weak offer out there for Jefferson just in case). The Van Buren Boys remain the league's highest scorers despite a loss to Gabe and somehow both Hoefs and Stoltz now sit at .500 as well. Half the league being .500... Has parity gone too far!? Nathaniel could use a bit more consistency in the backfield with De'Von Achane being a typical Dolphin (too reliant on Tua's health), James Cook losing goal line carries to his quarterback and Kenneth Walker's inconsistencies. Any additions will help with Brett being Nate's next opponent. Caleb Williams Nail Polish polished off his ass-kicking boot this week after taking down the 96ers' egos a bit by 20.5 points. Cole could have used a full game from a healthier Jordan Love. Oh well, love isn't the all-purpose life saver it's advertised to be. Just ask any therapist.

Week nine will showcase the Jets again because Thursday Night Football is a farce versus the Texans minus any pass-catching talent not named TANK. We'll also get the Falcons trying to solidify their status as contenders against a pitiful Cowboy team, the Dolphins trying to save themselves from total collapse against the big bad Bills and New England's Jacoby "Brisket" serving up some sloppy steaks against Mason Rudolph and the Titans in this week's Ignora Bowl (I'm trademarking this as the least fantasy relevant game of the week, please do not watch this game). The Lions will probably get revenge on the Packers for last season's Thanksgiving stuffing with Love and the Green Bay defense playing at less than 100% and to continue our NFC North focus, the Vikings host Joe Flacco and the Colts on Sunday Night Football. After the midseason draft, I might have to tap my helmet and take that game off however as we have our twice-annual ceremonial bonfire (Time to get rid of the old bathroom cabinetry). The Buccaneers are still getting by without Mike Evans and Chris Godwin or any resemblance of the dominating defense they had early in the 2020s but, it's going to take a lot more than a bounce-back to quality play to take down the 7-0 Chiefs on Monday Night. With RB Isaiah Pacheco one week away from returning and another trade acquisition (Uche), one thing remains certain: The Chiefs are inevitable.

"Fumbleroooooooski!" finds a way.
